How Ramadan Affects Scheduling for Global Teams
Ramadan is a month-long observance during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. If you work with colleagues or partners in Muslim-majority countries, it affects scheduling in concrete ways: shorter official working days, lower energy toward the end of the day, and a multi-day holiday at the end.
When it falls: Ramadan follows the Islamic lunar calendar, shifting roughly 10–11 days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar. It’s not a fixed window — check the current year’s dates before scheduling anything across affected regions.
How working hours change
Most Muslim-majority countries officially shorten the working day during Ramadan, typically by 1–2 hours:
- Gulf states: Official reduction of 2 hours per day. Government offices may start later; private sector varies.
- Malaysia and Indonesia: 1-hour reduction in many organisations.
- Pakistan: Shortened working day across public and private sectors.
- Turkey: No official reduction, but energy and attendance are noticeably lower in the final week.
What to adjust
Schedule earlier in the day. Energy and focus are higher in the morning before fasting fatigue sets in. Avoid the final hour or two before Iftar — the evening meal that breaks the fast — which is consistently the lowest-energy window of the day.
The last week is the hardest. Fatigue accumulates over a month. The final few days before Eid see the lowest availability. Treat it like a pre-holiday wind-down.
Eid al-Fitr is not a single day. Official public holidays may be 1–3 days, but many employees take additional time around Eid. Budget for a 3–5 day unavailability window at the end of Ramadan.
Skip the “grab a coffee” framing. It sounds like a small thing, but offering a casual call framed around food or drink to someone who is fasting is awkward for them. Just frame it as a call.
Move any approvals or decisions that need sign-off from these regions to before Ramadan starts or after Eid ends. For recurring calls during the month, keep them but accept lower engagement — reschedule anything particularly demanding.
Use meetwhen to find the morning overlap window between your city and your contact’s, especially when there’s also a time zone difference layered on top.
