Scheduling Across the Gulf: What the Working Week Looks Like in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar
The Gulf states don’t use a Saturday–Sunday weekend. Most of the region runs Sunday–Thursday, with Friday as a religious day. The UAE is an exception — it switched to Monday–Friday in January 2022 — but even in Dubai, Friday afternoons are quieter than the rest of the week due to Jumu’ah prayers.
If you’re scheduling from Europe or North America, this matters. Sending a proposal on a Friday expecting a Monday reply means it won’t be seen until Sunday in Riyadh or Qatar.
Working week by country
| Country | Working days | Weekend |
|---|---|---|
| UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi) | Monday–Friday | Saturday–Sunday |
| Saudi Arabia | Sunday–Thursday | Friday–Saturday |
| Qatar | Sunday–Thursday | Friday–Saturday |
| Kuwait | Sunday–Thursday | Friday–Saturday |
Typical hours: 8am–5pm or 9am–6pm. Government offices often start at 7:30am. Some private sector businesses close midday in summer heat and reopen in the evening — less common in multinationals, but worth knowing if your contact is local.
Time zones: UAE is UTC+4 (GST). Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain are UTC+3.
Overlap windows
| Your location | Usable overlap with UAE (9am–6pm GST, Mon–Fri) |
|---|---|
| London (GMT) | London mornings are the sweet spot |
| New York (EST) | Early morning only; async is usually the right default |
| Berlin (CET) | Mornings work well |
| San Francisco (PST) | Almost no usable overlap |
For Saudi Arabia, subtract one hour from the UAE column.
What to watch out for
Ramadan shortens the official working day by 2 hours across most Gulf countries. Energy and availability drop toward the end of the day. Avoid scheduling in the final hour before Iftar, and treat the last week before Eid like a pre-holiday wind-down.
Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are extended public holidays — 3–5 days officially, often longer in practice. Dates shift each year with the lunar calendar.
For US teams, the Gulf is one of the harder regions to schedule synchronously. A single weekly overlap call with async communication between is usually the most realistic setup. Use meetwhen with Asia/Dubai or Asia/Riyadh to find the window.
